Go Vote for Nicky!

According to MLB.com, The Roberto Clemente Award is bestowed annually on the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. Every year, each MLB Club nominates a player to be considered for the Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character. This year, the Kansas City Royals have nominated Nicky Lopez!

MLB.com writes, “There may not be a player in the game today whose on-field skills are more in alignment with the traits he also exhibits off the field: defense, sacrifice, team.” And Kansas City Credit Union couldn’t agree more! Nicky is a great player on the field, but since starting for the Royals in 2019, he has also been hard at work off the field. His community service record began with the Dream Factory; then in 2020, he started Nicky’s #1’s — working with Royals’ community partners at Operation Breakthrough and the YMCA Challenger program.

Nicky wanted to take it step further this summer – KCCU was honored to partner with Nicky, and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, for the Catch Success program. Catch Success, part of the Launch Pad program at the Linwood YMCA, was part of the 12-week educational enrichment program this summer, designed to enhance the financial literacy of Kansas City’s youth. The kids learned about the history of money, budgeting their money for both short- and long-term purchases, how interest is accrued by saving over time, how to save for emergencies and how to plan for future financial success.

At the end of the summer program, Nicky, Brandon Richardson with KCCU, and Andre Sigler from the Linwood YMCA presented each of the 40+ graduates with a custom backpack containing school supplies for the upcoming school year. All graduates also received a certificate to open a complimentary $25 savings account from KCCU to provide them a head start on their financial futures. Nicky commented that this program is something he had never seen before, and after 12 weeks, he is very excited to see these kids graduate!

Also, in celebration of the successful Summer 2022 Catch Success session, Lopez and KCCU presented the Linwood YMCA with a $10,000 donation check to help continue Catch Success, Launch Pad and other programming at the Linwood YMCA. A total of $20,000 has now been donated toward the overall goal of $50,000 to benefit the Linwood Y.

Lastly, for each current KCCU member that refers a new member to sign up for a savings or checking account at KCCU, the credit union will donate $50 back to the Y and you both can get a FREE month at the YMCA. Go here for more info.

Kansas City Credit Union is not the only one who thinks Nicky deserves this award. Vinnie Pasquantino said, “Nicky!! One of the most prestigious awards our game gives. All 30 of these guys are deserving, but personally I think everyone should go vote for Nicky!” And Bobby Witt Jr. said, “No better deserving!! Everyone go vote for Nicky!”

Nicky has been a great partner and spokesperson for KCCU, so we want to return the favor! Go vote for Nicky Lopez – he is so deserving of this award!
